With the conclusion of the 2023/2024 Academic school year approaching, the high school students are sad to hear that Mr. Sergio Uribe will be retiring from his work as our school’s Spanish teacher. He will be moving to spend more time with his family, create more art pieces, and be more active in his church by carrying out mission work.
Mr. Uribe has been teaching Spanish at Loma Linda Academy since 1991 for a total of 33 years. Mr. Uribe remembers when he first became interested in teaching:
“I was a gymnast when I was young. My coach asked me and others to help him teach little kids. I found out I liked it. Besides, when I was in 6th grade, a 3rd grade teacher was sick and my principal asked me to teach them. Every day before school he would tell me what to teach. I taught for three weeks until that teacher returned.”
That passion never faded. Mr. Uribe’s desire to teach only grew no matter how tough it got or how many long meetings he had to attend. With the date of his departure nearing, Mr. Uribe recalls memorable moments at Loma Linda Academy. “Spending time with students in the classroom was a lot of fun; I also enjoyed the teacher convention held by the school and my switch from Physical Education to teaching Spanish,” he said. Mr. Uribe leaves some words of advice for the students who will be taking Spanish next year: “Remember that God will use you and the language you learn now and much more in the future,” he said.
Furthermore, Mr. Uribe leaves with advice for the teacher who will be taking over the Spanish class next year: “You will have many challenges but also…lots of great times. Trust God and he will show you the way.” While it will not be the same without him, it was an absolute honor to have had Mr. Sergio Uribe as the academy's Spanish teacher.
